  • We've Got Spirit but We Need Uniforms!

    Funded Oct 30, 2020

Thank you so much for helping our squad this year! It has been different, to say the least, but we are certainly making the most of it and cheering on our teams beneath the Friday night lights. Although football season has almost reached its end, your donations will definitely take us into basketball season and beyond.

I'm so excited to share this wonderful news with the squad and can't wait to update you once we receive our items!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Vega

    Funded Apr 24, 2018

Once again, I'd like to start by saying thank you! In the past few months since we've received our books, I've been able to share these words with over 100 students. Their stories are scattered throughout the halls of our school, intertwined in each line of our books and ingrained in my heart. Having 2 culturally-relevant books available for students to pick up has made reading more accessible and more enjoyable for them.

Currently, my new batch of 9th graders are reading I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter and absolutely LOVING it! It's been so rewarding to read with them and watch their reactions change as we discover new facets of the main character and her journey toward self-discovery. As you know, my students are predominantly latino and come from an urban area of the city. This book has shown them that their stories are relevant and worthy of being written about in fiction, in their notebooks and in history.

Probably the most beautiful gift these books have given us is the ability to have important discussions surrounding sexual consent, mental health, social justice and racism. My students are so smart and have a lot to say. I'm happy that the issues written about in both books have paved the way for the students to express themselves about the things that are going on in the world around them now and in the past.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Vega

As a Latina in education, I've been so grateful for the opportunity to connect with my students on a deeper level of understanding outside of the content I teach. Hearing their stories and getting to peek inside their lives inspires me to be a better person and a better teacher. Cesar Chavez once said, “We need to help students and parents cherish and preserve the ethnic and cultural diversity that nourishes and strengthens this community - and this nation.” I couldn't agree more. Many times, our kids are told that for them, the sky is not the limit, rather the ceiling is; and unfortunately, they start to believe it. But of course, why wouldn't they when schools constantly leave out pieces of their history? With your help, the 2 class sets of books my students will read are I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sanchez and Dear Martin by Nic Stone. Both are written by women of color and discuss issues surrounding mental health, immigration, systemic racism and police brutality. All of which are important discussions for my students to think critically about since these are all issues they deal with in their own lives. When I graduated from the University of Texas I was reminded daily that what started there, would change the world. Help me change the one my students live in!
