Funded Apr 19, 2016The look on my students' faces when I surprised them with the new novels is one that I will remember for a lifetime. My students were so thankful and humbled by the fact that strangers, who they will likely never meet, were generous enough to donate books to our library. For some, this will be the first time that they are the first students to read a brand new novel. My students immediately began signing books out of the classroom library to take home with them as part of their Independent Reading Unit.
My students are thrilled to be reading novels that are not only current and contemporary but explore powerful themes and reach valuable lessons. Students will be using these novels to analyze how characters develop, grow and change given their individual circumstance, similarly to the way adolescents change and adapt as they become young adults. They will also focus on literary elements such as plot and setting and how they contribute to the overall story; relating this to how their environment and circumstances shape their own lives. With the new additions to our classroom, students will be able to feed their love of literature while reading novels that push their intellectual boundaries and stimulate their growing minds.
In my classroom, students are given the first ten minutes of class to silently read their novels. This gives students a chance to wind down from their previous class period and zone in to the world presented in their books. I immediately notice that students are now more excited to come to class and read now that they have access to novels that were on their personal wish lists. Even students who are part of classes that are not completing the Independent Reading Unit are ecstatic about our new additions and have requested to "check out" one of the new books!
We are so grateful to all those who supported and donated to our library. You have brought a piece of paradise to our classroom!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Patruno
