  • Becoming A Reader = Best Gift Ever!

    Funded Nov 9, 2023

On behalf of our school community, I want to express our deepest gratitude to DonorsChoose for their incredible support in providing Jayson Reynolds books to our students. Your generosity has brought immense joy and enrichment my classroom, allowing our students to explore the diverse narratives and perspectives depicted in Reynolds' works. With these books, our students have been transported into worlds filled with relatable characters, thought-provoking themes, and powerful storytelling.

The impact of these donated books extends far beyond the pages themselves. They have sparked conversations, ignited imaginations, and fostered a love for reading among our students. Through Reynolds' engaging narratives, our students have found mirrors to reflect their own experiences and windows to explore the experiences of others. These books have not only enhanced our literary curriculum but have also served as catalysts for empathy, understanding, and personal growth.

We are profoundly grateful to DonorsChoose for recognizing the importance of diverse literature in education and for their unwavering commitment to supporting educators and students across the country. Their generosity has empowered us to create a more inclusive and enriching learning environment for our students, and we are truly thankful for their partnership in our mission to inspire and educate the next”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Maziarz

  • Softball for All!

    Funded Jul 26, 2023

We are deeply moved and incredibly grateful for your generous contributions to our girls' softball program in our underprivileged area. Your unwavering support has not only provided opportunities for these young athletes but has also ignited hope and inspiration within our community.

More than just the tangible items, your support has given these girls a sense of belonging and a community to call their own. In a world that can sometimes feel indifferent, your generosity has shown them that there are people who genuinely care about their well-being and their future. This sense of belonging is priceless and has a lasting impact on their self-esteem and social development.

Through your contributions, we have been able to gain necessary equipment, which have not only improved their softball skills but also fostered important life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. These girls are learning valuable lessons that will serve them well beyond the softball field, setting them on a path towards success in whatever endeavors they choose to pursue.

We cannot emphasize enough how your contributions have lifted the spirits of these young girls. They now have dreams and aspirations that reach beyond the boundaries of their circumstances. Your belief in them has ignited a fire within them to strive for excellence, and they are determined to make the most of this incredible opportunity.

  • Stand for a Chance!

    Funded Jan 15, 2021

Thanks to you, students were able to work in a flexible seating arrangement! Learners were given the option to sit, stand, wobble, transition, and take much needed brain breaks; they were positively impacted by the positive blood flow, which fostered more engagement. Because of your generosity, I have grown as an educator in my planning. I was able to think about not only what I was teaching but how the setting of the environment impacts how I teach.

Without question, this change to the archaic way of seating students in hard desks was long overdue, and your contribution will be appreciated for years to come!

    Thank you so much!”

  • When I Need to Escape, I READ!

    Funded May 8, 2020

Pedagogical research proves that giving young learners the ability to choose engaging books that they are personally drawn to is the best way to establish a life-long love of reading. This Donor's Choose was established to get books into the hands of today's remote learners. Physically getting the books to the remote students has taken many house visits. I would like to share excerpts from some of the students' emails with you.

    "Hi Ms.Maze!

I just wanted to let you know that I greatly appreciate you taking time out of your day to drop off the books at my home. I hope you enjoy your weekend! Stay safe."

    -IS (Student)

    "Good afternoon Ms.Maze,

I LOVE the choice book You in Five Acts by Una LaMarche. It definitely grew onto me and I became hooked binge reading each chapter. I was so disappointed about what happened to one of my favorite characters but I'm so glad I read it, because this book is very realistic as to how our world is today. It reminds me of Monday's Not Coming, another one my favorites.

    Thank you again!"

    -CS (Student)

Students use their choices books in their virtual Socratic Seminars, Google Classroom discussions (which are like Black Board discussions), and in their writing assessments. It allows them an alternate route outside of our whole class text to demonstrate mastery of reading skills.”

  • Lights, Camera, Action! Let the Learning Begin!

    Funded Nov 5, 2019

Without your generosity, my learners would not have been able to be part of this community-based arts program. Students were able to work with a teaching artist from Hartford Stage and see three performances (Two that you provided busing for) that uniquely built on our curriculum. In addition. these learners were able to have lunch together in a setting outside of the school cafeteria, which was a special opportunity for them to build relationships that I didn't plan for.

One specific example that I would like to share was when we arrived at Hartford Stage for one of the performances, and remarked, "Wow look at the stage! We are really lucky, the other classes don't get to come here!"

Overall, these learners were more excited about their learning, and more eager to be engaged our daily activities and assessments because they felt like their learning extended outside the walls of our classroom... they felt the meaningful purpose of it all. They truly understood that they were part of a more conceptual learning experience that was framed with experiences - instead of worksheets and test prep.

We appreciate you more than you know!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Maziarz

What inspired me to start this project was a post from one of my learners which I am going to share with you. Unfortunately, many of my learners have reached out stating that they don't have books and that they don't have any way to acquire books. I ordered and sent a copy of a book to a student today with a special note; she will receive it as a surprise - a little something to raise her spirits. However, MANY students have reached out about not wanting to read online and not having books at home - as that is their only schooling platform. I cannot possibly afford to send a high-interest personal book every time a learner reaches out to me, and it breaks my heart because a good book could be just the distraction that many of them need. After asking my learners: What is in your house for possible reading material? I received this: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Student Name Erased) Hot Rod Magazine March of 1985 Issue “Winston. America’s Best. Excellence. The best live up to it.” I found the abundance of these cigarette adds very interesting due to the very drastic change on the view of them over the course of 35 years. In 1885 the marketing teams were practically cramming these adds down the consumers’ throats and now, it is very looked down upon if one were to smoke cigarettes. These adds are an example of very persuasive writing that can be used in a persuasive essay. Note: I currently have a lack of literature in my household. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Because of the example above and many other stories that I could share, I will mails every book that I receive from Donors Choose with a special note to one of my learners.
