Our students love to read and discuss books--especially if the books' characters are relatable to our students' lives. But, we need more books to pass around. Authors are writing more diverse books that become mirrors and even windows for our students... and our students love this! We have created a monthly book club to help the students make connections with other readers of the same books. Seeing a story unfold with characters who reflect their own situations and issues is enjoyable for our diverse population. We are finding many of these titles on Oklahoma's Sequoyah Book Award list for high school students as well as the Project LIT Community Book Club list. Our teen readers are staying up, finishing a book, and then recounting the story with their friends the next morning; an entire crew of friends arrive at the library wanting to read the book next. But, we only have one copy. Therefore, names are put on the "Hold" list. It just takes too long for friends to read the recommendations... the need to discuss dwindles. We need more copies of these diverse titles so that: more people can read at a time; more discussions can happen; more recommendations occur; reading scores keep improving; and, we don't lose the momentum that has started with one student reading one story.
