Literacy is a class designed to encourage mid-level students to grow their love for reading and writing. Sixth-grade Literacy focuses specifically on high-interest novels for mid-level students. Literacy 6 students are always to have a novel of their choice to read in class. Knowing a student's interests and helping them find great titles about those interests is essential to growing their love of reading. Some of my students' (and my) current favorite authors to read include Gordon Korman, Victoria Jamieson, Kwame Alexander, and Alan Gratz. As a whole class, we read The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker-Bradley and Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Students will also read a novel together in small groups call Literature Circles. Students show depth of knowledge and mastery of concepts through multi-modal projects, including Fractured Fairy Tale booklets, book mosaics, and book museums.
