Utilizing books with African American male characters will allow our students to see themselves in these stories. The impact of seeing African American characters making good choices and contributing to society is an opportunity for our boys to see what these characters valued and how they worked to be successful. The African American biographies and Exceptional African Americans series highlight contributions made to society in music, science, medicine, history, and sports. Project Hope is H (Heroes) O (of) P (Positive) E (Examples) will use these biographies with our African American male students to study the challenges and problems the characters encountered to overcame adversity and be successful. We want to share life lessons with our boys so they can learn from the example of these famous African Americans. The biography choices represent a variety of role models and reading levels. The examples they set for our students are relevant and will highly impact their view of themselves and their future. The fiction selections allow our students to see African American boys as central characters who can manage friendships, reinforce the importance of families and their values and see themselves in the hero of these books. The fictional characters are relatable and there is always a life lesson to share with the story. We are hopeful that Project H.O.P.E. will be a vehicle for African American boys to become more proficient readers and lifelong learners. Our students struggle with reading and academics. The student turn over rate at our school is high and we want to use Project H.O.P.E. to make a big impact on our students for however long they are at our school.
