I Am Here... Do You See Me?
Funded Oct 21, 2021Thank you for funding my project, I Am Here ...Do You See Me. This project was centered around cultural identify and promoting self-awareness in my Kindergarten class. The majority of the books are picture books and contain vibrant images of people that look like my students. I noticed when I read a book from this collection, it immediately became a class favorite. It has become the new norm to see one of these books sprawled on the carpet with several students eyeballing the pages. Simply put they love...love...love THEM !!!
Also, these books provided support for our 1st two units in Social Studies, Home and Community and Myself and my Community. We constantly made text to self connections to the books and spoke of whom the characters reminded them of. They truly enjoyed seeing themselves in these books. We painted self portraits, created flags about the countries of their ancestors, recited powerful affirmations and created All About Me books.
Lastly, often they ask me to read one of their favorites over and over again. Once again, thank your for helping us along the journey of enhancing self awareness and
cultural identity.”

Funded May 29, 2016Dear Donors:
At first, I allowed my little eager minds to explore the "Magna-Tiles" on their own. I noticed their eyes lit up and I keep hearing... OOOh and Ahhh !!! Then, they discovered that the blocks stuck together and they heard a clicking sound. One little girl said, "That's one of my five senses hearing" someone else said, "No, that's eyesight!" I felt great because we were in the middle of our five senses unit. The idea of exploring and making things with the blocks is now embedded into our daily routine. They have created towers, trains, a spaceship and a rocket ship The first student to arrive in the morning, automatically takes down the magna-tiles. They have quickly become their favorite, "Tabletop Activity."
During our Math unit on shapes the magna-tiles once again became my go to resource, they were used to reinforce primary and secondary colors. We used them to sort by colors, size, and shapes. Now that we know the name of different shapes we continued to use them to learn the property of each shape. The size of the tiles made it easier for their little fingers to count the corners and sides of the squares and rectangles.
I truly believe that the magna tiles will continue to be a BIG HIT in my classroom, I intend to incorporate them in STEM lessons when we start our upcoming units , Where We Live and Transportation. I would like to add them to the block area in the near future so that they can create modern and traditional structures as they learn through play.”

So You Think You Can .... YOGA !
Funded Mar 19, 2016Dear Donors:
My PreK students have yoga instruction every other week. Then one day the box came and I slowly revealed the contents, there were countless smiles of sunshine. First, we formed our yoga circle and started our breathing exercises using the sphere. Next, the yoga cards were opened and we searched the deck for familiar poses. This became an impromptu yoga scavenger hunt... So Much Fun ! The day the box came was a fun filled morning.
One of my goals was to seamlessly incorporate yoga and these products into our school day. During reading time we use the yoga cards instead of reading a book with our partner. We sing alphabet songs using our ABC yoga cards and our book is used for read aloud. During our plant unit we used our yoga cards and poses to review the parts of a plant. Additionally, we love the resonating sound of the chime. The singing bowl helps to keep us calm.
We will continue to use the yoga materials to enhance the learning of our monthly themes, during gym time, outdoor play and morning meetings. In the future the yoga book and cards will be placed in the quiet cozy area along with the books and dolls.
I earnestly believe that these yoga materials will indeed make a lasting impact on my PreK students and myself for years to come. All because, "We Think We Can Do Yoga !"”
