In my classroom, I have students who suffer from limited vocabulary, poor opportunity for literacy exposure, and language barriers. My students have very little opportunity to experience a rich language environment and many arrive to school with severely underdeveloped oral language skills. Our school is in an extreme high poverty area in a rural part of Oklahoma. Many students come from broken homes and lack positive role models in their home environment. The parents who are involved in their child's learning typically have no higher than a high school diploma and many did not accomplish that level of education. The majority of students have little to no exposure to written literature prior to starting school. They are like sponges when they arrive, struggling to soak up every bit of learning they can.
