These books will enhance the culture of reading and inquiry that I have been striving to maintain in my classroom. With scheduled times for independent reading each week, it is crucial that students have a wide array of high-interest books from which to choose. Students also use their independent books as mentor texts to help better themselves as both readers and writers. At the end of each quarter, students must also submit an Independent Reading Project in which they choose how to demonstrate their understanding of the book and the impact it had on them. Students deserve access to engaging, interesting, and relatable books that they will genuinely enjoy reading. It's not enough for them to read only the classics of literature in English class; they need to be given time to read texts that both reflect their own experiences and offer windows into new ones. Each of the titles included here were selected with specific students in mind. I also asked for student input regarding which genres and authors they would like to see more of. Some of my favorite moments this year have been unprompted conversations with students about the books they're reading and how much they enjoy them. I would love to continue to provide them with books that are thoroughly exciting and that they feel compelled to share with me and their classmates!
