My students desire reading material in specific genres. My classroom library has limited book choices and many books are antiquated. I invite students to share book titles, authors, or genres of interest to add to our monthly classroom wishlist. I provide all I can from student suggestions, but I cannot build my library quick enough to meet their needs. Providing books of desired topics increases and generates excitement for reading. I am hopeful to hook resistant readers into becoming lifelong readers, with the right book. With these new books, my students will have a variety of choices for both novel projects and pleasure reading. Providing books of interest will improve student engagement during reading time, both inside and outside of class. Seeing one student change an opinion on reading after the "right" single book is exhilarating. Reading provides my students an increased vocabulary, experience with words in context, and access to the global information and outlook. I love to hold book talks over new books within the classroom. They help generate enthusiasm for the book, and the new ones are checked out shortly thereafter. The few books that make it to the bookshelf are prominently displayed and referenced to generate higher interest. I love to have students share (without spoilers) previously read novels. The new books will also provide additional reading material for my avid readers who crave the current popular teen appropriate books.
