Kindergarten is such a fun and exciting grade to teach! For many students, it is their first experience in a classroom or structured setting, and in many ways Kindergarten is the year of learning how to "do school". Students are meeting new friends, learning the basics of reading and writing, developing number sense, and discovering new-found interests and curiosities, but this is becoming more and more challenging with today's standards and expectations. To increase engagement and develop creative thinking, problem solving, and peer relationships, our kindergarten team has implemented Guided Math.
Highly-engaging, creative STEM materials allow for hands-on learning while students also develop social skills through cooperative play. During Guided Math, students are taught in small groups with targeted instruction that meets their learning goals and needs. When students are not with a teacher for guided instruction, they need to be able to stay on task through independent or cooperative tasks. The STEM building materials I am requesting will be used for those groups during our Guided Math rotations. This will provide them with a large variety of materials to keep them engaged and learning through play. Students will be able to exercise "voice and choice" in their learning by selecting materials and toys that are interesting to them and get their creative brains thinking and building.
With the prevalence of technologies in our classroom and world, these STEM activities will not only engage them now, but for years to come. This authentic engagement and excitement will help our students be successful independent and cooperative learners.
