Eggs to Fry: Raising and Releasing Trout!

Funded Mar 4, 2014

I just wanted to take the time to say thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for allowing me to give my students such a meaningful experience. With the money you provided, we were able to go to Lone Pine Creek and release our trout. Each student got to release between three and five trout that we raised in our classroom into their natural habitat. They got to watch their trout swim away in the creek and see them embrace their freedom. Some of my students were moved to tears because of this experience. They felt so good about being able to send their trout out into the wild where they belong. After releasing our trout, the Aguabonitas explained how they take care of the trout's environment and ensure their survival. My students got to take part in such an important effort that they won't forget.

In addition to releasing our trout, we were able to go to the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery and see their efforts in replenishing the trout population in our local streams, rivers, and lakes. We got to learn about the history of these efforts, from when trout were taken by mule and now by helicopter into their natural habitat. My students were able to see how important the Rainbow Trout is to it's ecosystem and just how many plants and animals depend on its survival. In addition to the history, students were also able to feed full-size trout in the pond. About ten students were leaning over the pond, up to their shoulders, trying to touch the trout. So few of them have had the opportunity to feed and touch a fish. It was very exciting (and nerve-wracking) for all involved! The experience was far beyond what I could ever have provided them in the classroom.

Please know that you provided a rare opportunity for 29 kids to take part in the protection and replenishing of an important natural resource. Their appreciation for wildlife and the ecosystem has increased tenfold. I cannot explain the immense gratitude I have for you allowing me to take my students on this trip. I am so thankful for you all, and know you've made an enormous impact on 29 students.”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Ghilardi
