The seating items I have requested will be used on a daily basis. They will replace the traditional desk and hard, plastic chair models that our school has been using for decades. When my students walk into the classroom, they will have a choice to sit (or stand) in whatever position is most conducive to their learning. If they have extra energy that day, they may want to sit on a stool that spins and rolls.
If it is time for reading and they want to sink into a beanbag chair, I want that to be available to them.
Beanbag chairs, tall tables and stools, and exercise balls are some of the items that I am requesting through this Donors Choose project. Over the next three months, I will be collecting everything from seating pillows and balance boards to bungee chairs, to add to my collection.
One important thing I have learned by being a teacher is that student choice leads to student engagement. The freedom to make a choice to better our circumstances is the basis of improving our lives. One of my desires in making this transition is to teach my students how to recognize what their needs are, in order to learn and how to, then, make an educated choice that will fill those needs.
Currently, in my classroom, I have twenty-eight hard, plastic chairs. My students love when I let them sit on the floor with clipboards, sit in the my office chair or in the 'throne' I created, and are already requesting more flexible seating pieces. I would greatly appreciate your help in providing these choices to them. Thank-you so much for your time!
