Having costumes for our productions of Peter Pan will help students present fully developed characters to our audiences and significantly boost their confidence for performances. Costumes are the first impression you have of a character and help cement who they are, both in the mind of the audience and the actor. These costumes, wigs, and accessories will be used for a total of 18 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade class productions of Peter Pan this year alone. They will continue to be used year after year by one whole grade level of classes for a yearly performance, as well as in classroom instruction. Performing on stage helps students recognize their potential for success. It improves self confidence and provides a positive outlet for students with social/emotional challenges in the classroom. Theatre education improves reading comprehension, verbal and non-verbal communication skills, and can help to improve school attendance. There have been a series of studies on the arts and education revealing a consistent link between performing and the improvement of verbal skills as well as significant increases in story recall and the understanding of written material. Research indicates that drama courses and performance have a particularly positive effect on at-risk youth and students with learning disabilities.
