Modern readers do not limit themselves to reading novels. Daily we read emails, news articles, tweets, infographics, and a variety of other media critically and selectively. I want to offer my students the same opportunity by using Kindles in class.
Providing students with Kindles will allow for reading exploration that cannot be pursued when we are limited to the printed page. We will be able to share and analyze modern digital texts by asking tough questions: Is this source reliable? Is this writer's voice authentic? What does this writer do that makes this text more interesting than another article on the same topic?
These are the life-long essential reading and thinking skills that will empower students as they encounter all manner of text outside of a textbook.
In addition to the rich analysis experience that we will share as a class, a Kindle in each students' hand will also allow them to curate their own reading lists for independent reading time and enable them to share their reading discoveries with the whole class instantly. Students of all ability levels will be able to seek out high-interest materials. Students with special needs and English language learners will be able to listen with headphones while reading along with read-aloud apps. Kindles will provide the opportunity for every student to establish a real-world foundation of reading and critical thinking.
