Math Here, Math There, Math Everywhere!
Funded Dec 13, 2017These resources came in just at the right time. We are currently learning about 2-D and 3-D shapes. The students began experimenting with the shapes. During one aspect of our assignment, the students needed to know whether or not you could stack, slide or roll the shapes. My students used the 3-D shapes to find out the results.
When my students first saw these materials, I'm not sure what they were most excited about; the dominoes or the magnetic tiles. For the first few(about 20) minutes, I just let them play with the new materials. They were a little upset when I told them it was time to put them away and get back to our Math lesson.
We have already complete several lessons that use these materials, but I will use them for reviewing of the lessons we have already covered. The dice that have ten-frames will be used by the students when we begin adding numbers. The students will get to dice, roll them and then add the numbers together.
Thank you so much for the support of my classroom and my kids.”

Funded Oct 29, 2017We have been using the balls in a variety of ways. One way that has been the most activity and entertaining is when we have done phoneme segmentation. I say a word and my students bounce the ball one time for each sound they here in the words. Not only does this teach them hand-eye coordination, it is teaching them how to sound out the words.
My original project was for 2 basketballs, 2 footballs, 2 soccer balls and a basketball goal. I had to order replacement items, where I fortunate enough to be able to order more than originally planned. I was able to order 6 basketballs, 6 footballs, 6 soccer balls, and 9 kick balls as well as the basketball goal. When the kids saw the balls for the first time, their excitement was overwhelming. They were screaming and jumping and wanting a specific color of ball. I am not sure how was more excited, our kids or myself and co-workers by seeing how much the kids are loving the balls.
My students will continue using the balls in and out of the classroom to enhance hand-eye coordination. One idea I have in mind is having the students pair-up and practice their spelling by saying a letter then tossing ball to their partner while they say the next letter.”

Funded Aug 24, 2017We received our dry erase table and have been using the table for practicing our spelling words and math lessons. During the spelling lesson, I wrote the spelling list on the table and the students finished their seat work; the students would go to the table and practice writing their spelling words. Some of the students would use multiple colors of markers, one for consonants and another color for the vowels. During the math, we have been working on creating a number using tally marks, base ten blocks, and pictures. The students would chose a number the create that number by using all concepts that we have been working with.
When the students first saw the table, they all wanted to be the first one to get to write on it. They thought it was cool they could write on it and not get in trouble for writing on it. It has only been a couple of days since we have started using it but I think the students are loving it. It has also motivated them to get their seat work completed; so they can go and do the table work.
I believe that first grade is a huge step in their learning process, where they go from play to learning to read. For some students it is a huge step and takes lots of adjusting and getting use too. Some projects that I have planned incorporate the upcoming seasons and holidays. If the students are having fun while learning, I believe they will retain what they have learned much better. Therefore; this dry erase table will allow students to have fun while learning.”

Arts, Smarts: We Need Supplies!
Funded Sep 23, 2017We have received our art supplies. I was amazed at how fast we received them after my project was funded. We have used the some of the construction paper for creating a mosaic owl. The students loved being able to chose their favorite colors to create their owls. I enjoyed seeing and hearing the students talk about what color they wanted to use on their owl and why they chose that specific color. It was amazing to see how engaged the students were in this activity.
I picked up my packages for the office while my kids were at P.E.. I had them sitting in the floor when they came back in and allowed my leaders to help open the boxes while the other kids watched. They were so excited to see all the paper but were very curious about the paint droppers. We haven't used them yet but we will soon as Halloween is coming up.
In the coming weeks, as Halloween approaches; I plan to have my students use the paint droppers while making a salt painting of a pumpkin. We will use salt and glue to make the pumpkin. I will have paint thinned in water for the students to use the paint droppers and apply the paint to the salt. The salt will absorb the paint and create a beautiful pumpkin. My kids will this use the colored chalk to fill in the pumpkin.
Again, thank you to all the donors whom have made my projects come to life.”
