I am seeking support to purchase a tablet to utilize with plickers.com, a real-time formative assessment data tool. I plan to use this with 23 classes in grades 3rd to 5th. Plickers is a student response system in which the teacher utilizes the Plickers app (free) on a tablet. Each student has a unique barcode---a paper clicker printed on cardstock which is glued inside their notebook and reused each day. Each card is unique and not easily identifiable by other students. Therefore, students can not copy off of others! Each student will hold up a Plickers card to answer a multiple choice or true/false question at the end of class. The small print of the answers and the unique shapes on each Plickers card protect students’ privacy so they can answer questions honestly without worrying about what their peers think of their answers. The camera on the tablet is then used to scan student answer cards. The scanning process takes about ten seconds. Plickers will display how many students’ responses I’ve captured. It will also indicate students for which I do not have data, in case someone didn’t hold up a card or chose not to answer. This technology provides accountability for all students while engaging them in critical thinking. Students get to participate without feeling self conscious. Student answers are automatically transformed into a real time bar graph. Data is stored individually by student. A bar graph of the class results can be viewed by me or by the whole group. Plickers will provide me with instant feedback to monitor, adapt, and/or modify instruction to consistently ensure that all students achieve the desired effect. Plickers will assess mastery of daily learning goals.
