"It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations—something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own." —Katherine Patterson In order to engage my students in reading, they need books that reflect who they are. I am trying to build a library of books in Spanish, that my students can relate to. They need books that are not only accessible based on their level of Spanish, but also entertaining and engaging. Some requested titles include Cajas de Carton: Relatos de la Vida Peregrina de un Nino Campesino, El Alquimista: Una Fabula Para Seguir Tus Suenos, Pedro Paramo, Como agua para chocolate, La Casa en Mango Street, and ¿Quién fue Pablo Picasso? I want my students to fall in love with reading, and emphasize their pride in who they are. By providing Spanish language books to my students, they will be able to improve reading proficiency, build academic vocabulary, and learn about other cultures. I plan on encouraging students to read by allowing them to borrow books from the library for book reports and discussions. In the words of Garrison Keillor, "a book is a gift you can open again and again." Please consider giving this gift to my students.
