Returning Curiosity to Science
Funded Aug 27, 2022I was charged with teaching multiple grade levels of science this year, and to say the least it was overwhelming. However, when I reached out to you, there was an immediate outpouring of support.
My 3rd grade kids have been using these materials as soon as we received them. We started with our magnetic unit which the kids loved already, but it really helped these concepts to connect by using multiple materials that I can spread out the class.
My 4th graders got to use the Legos to help build and design things for multiple units. We got to built models of circuits and also use them for our bridge unit as well. We have more plans as the time goes by!
My youngest kids haven't gotten to use their weather items yet (that unit comes in April) but they did get to see seeds grow in greater detail from what they received.
What I'm trying to say in a long winded way is thank you. The kids love this stuff and it really does help them connect to the unit. Thanks to you, truly.”
With gratitude,

Funded Nov 30, 2010I took a chair and sat down in front of my classes. They knew at this point, that this gesture is a signal that I am about to share important information with them. My students listened as I reviewed every single book that was donated to use and I told them how each one can help them become a better reader, person and is a way to find fun in the classroom.
After I finished with my presentation the students swarmed over the book. They were excited, in a way that made my heart warm since I had only seen them be this ecstatic a few times. And this time they were thrilled about books! Even my English Language Learners joined in on the action.
One of my students raised her hand and asked me a question during reading time. She paused and looked around when I started talking to her. I asked her, "What's up?" "Listen!" She said, "They've never been this quiet!" And she was right, everyone was absorbed in a book.
These feelings haven't really stopped in my classroom. My kids are coming up to me afterclass and asking to checkout books. Asking me if we are getting more. Asking me, where these came from, and I told them they came from you.
My students and I want to convey our most heart-felt thanks. In reality we wish we could shake everyones' hand and look you in the eye and thank you in person. For those of us who you have touched with this simple gesture, we remember you and we are thankful that you believed in the power of a book.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Castillo
