Mathematicians Need Markers
Funded Apr 7, 2021Thank you for your generosity toward this project. Due to your kindness and generosity all students will be given dry erase markers to use in school or remotely in order to complete academic tasks. These markers make it possible for students to reuse teacher made laminated materials. They can also be used on a variety of surfaces that can be wiped clean. The convenience of owning dry erase markers can be taken for granted. These are a small tool that many students do not have. Giving students these tools allows them to flexibly use them throughout their learning in a way that works for them. Thank you again.”

Funded Feb 25, 2020Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity towards this project. It is bittersweet to write this letter because unfortunately, these supplies could not be used by our cheerleading team due to Covid-19 school closures and the suspension of extracurricular activities. I look forward to returning to the PS239 building eventually and most of all I look forward to coaching a future cheerleading team under the new safety guidelines. We WILL use these supplies when given proper safety protocols to do so. Thank you again.”

Funded Oct 23, 2020In these uncertain times learning looks a lot different for my students, and teaching looks very different for me. In the midst of the pandemic I was lucky enough to give birth to a baby boy and this week I returned from my maternity leave. Thanks to your generous donation, when I returned, I was fully prepared to rock remote learning.
The ring light and microphone have allowed me to be seen and heard very clearly when I meet with my students for live instruction. Those supplies also allow me to record very clear videos for my students. In the spring I recorded weekly videos that focused on tools for success to guide them through their remote learning. The videos were sometimes dark and the audio was unclear. My new supplies have solved those issues and set me up to successfully record videos my students can access at any time.
The printer and scanner has been very helpful for scanning documents into my virtual classroom effectively. This saves time because I do not have to retype any documents, I can scan and share within minutes. Being able to do this allows me to have more time for planning, meeting with students, collaborating with staff members, and connecting with families. Having a printer with ink also allows me to have the opportunity to mail materials to my students. I plan on mailing them little projects that can be done with materials around the house and templates I can print.
I cannot thank you enough for your generous donation. These uncertain times have made teaching difficult. However, having the tools to succeed makes it a lot easier. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart.”

Funded Feb 15, 2019Thank you so much for your generous donations towards this project! The cheerleaders were so excited when they received their bags and socks for the competition. Not only did the cheerleaders have a place to hold their belongings for the day and matching socks, they looked like professional athletes! I was able to put each girls name on their bags which also made it easy when distributing uniforms and keeping track of belongings.
At our first cheerleading competition our team earned fourth place out of six teams! We are so proud of how hard our girls worked to achieve this. Most importantly the team had a blast and made amazing memories that will hopefully encourage them to continue being a part of a sports team in the future.
Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Cheerleading was a very special part of my past and I'm so grateful I can mold and shape these experiences for the students on the cheerleading team at PS239.”

Funded Mar 27, 2018My students and I are so grateful for our new reading table. As an academic interventionist, I work with small groups of students at a time. I closely monitor student performance on the spot and give immediate feedback to each student as we are working together. This new table allows me to sit in the center of my groups. I have access to all of my students at once and it allows me to work with students more closely.
When students came into my room and saw the table for the first time they were so excited. The students were thrilled to sit at the table and they comment on the table each time they come into my room. One of my students told me she loves the new table because it allows me to be in the middle and look directly into their eyes as opposed to standing next to them or behind them.
I am going to continue using this table with small groups. I look forward to facilitating small groups with this new piece of furniture. Thank you again for your generous donation.”

Funded Jan 12, 2017On March 11th, 2017 you helped us provide our Cheerleading squad an unforgettable opportunity. As a title one school we are not afforded with many opportunities and we thank you for being able to bring that to our girls.
Our students took a bus from PS239 in Queens, NY and headed to the St. John's University campus where we were met the St. John's Cheerleaders. The St. John's Cheerleaders spent the morning teaching our students some amazing new moves, cheers and stunts. The smiles on our girls faces were contagious.
The highlight of the trip for our students was to participate in a new routine with the St. John's Cheerleaders. They grasped the cheer and moves taught immediately. At the end, our students were able to perform the cheer for the audience in the bleachers.
Since the cheer clinic, our girls are inspired to be the best cheerers they can be. They have been working hard on the new cheers and moves they learned and look forward to show off their talents at the Teacher Student basketball game in a few short weeks.
As you can see from our photographs, our students had an amazing experience at St. John's. We appreciate your generosity.”

Funded Jul 27, 2016Dear Donors,
I cannot thank you enough for your generosity in funding mats for the 5th grade cheerleading team. The cheerleading team is a program at P.S. 239 that a few volunteers and I began three years ago. When the program started we practiced in my classroom when the surrounding classes were at lunch so we didn't disturb anyone. We had no materials and the cheerleaders had to stand in between desks when practicing. Currently the program is thriving. We meet weekly before school to prepare for our staff versus student basketball game, practice cheers, work together to stunt, and we have even incorporated a dance component. The addition of these mats has allowed us to provide the team with a safe environment for girls who know gymnastics and for our stunt groups.
Since it is still the beginning of the year, we have only had two practices so far. We are still working on team building activities that foster friendship and leadership. Last week we took out the mats for the first time. The girls were in awe! They already started talking about stunt groups and who would work best together. Although we haven't stunted on the mats yet, we have started to create our groups and we hope to begin stunting by the end of November.
Now that we have mats available to us, the volunteer coaches and I are brainstorming a list of new events for the cheerleaders to perform at. We are planning on having a pep rally before field day in the spring in addition to our very exciting staff versus student basketball game.
Once again the fifth grade cheerleaders, volunteer coaches, school administration and I could not thank you enough for making our cheerleading program better than ever.”

Funded Oct 26, 2015I cannot thank you enough for all the generous donations my students and I received toward this project.
Computers and printers are tools that are vital to success in a classroom. I have currently been a special education teacher for approximately five years. My current position title is Special Education Teacher Support Service (SETSS) provider. In my role as a SETSS provider, I take special education students out of their general education classrooms throughout the day and provide them with small group instruction focused on their individual goals. For the past three years I have held this position, I have had three different classrooms or offices. Each year, I spend most of my time searching for reliable technology to use during my lessons or ways to print resources for my students. This year, I brought my personal laptop to work and I decided to dedicate this computer to my students. In the middle of September, my only form of reliable technology, my computer, stopped working. This was detrimental to my instruction. Without a computer, I could not access any of the interactive portions of the curriculum, look up resources, print materials, etc. Technology can be used as a form of instruction that brings content to life for the population of students I work with. The day my computer stopped working is the day I decided to join Donors Choose.
When our resources were delivered to my classroom, my students were thrilled. I asked them what a computer and printer in my office meant to them. Here were some of their responses:
"We can look for maps online!"
"We can scan pages of our favorite books and print copies so we can highlight the text."
"We can watch math videos."
"We can print pictures that help us learn vocabulary."
"If your office is moved again next year, you can take the computer and printer with us wherever we go."
My students have amazing ideas about ways to use our new technology and and I will make it my goal to use these new resources for all these reasons and more.
So far, in the few months that I have had these tools, my office and my instruction have been changed for the better. I no longer have to wander the halls of my school in search of a working computer or printer. I can print, scan and copy any materials that I need at any time.
Before this school year began, I bought myself a projector to hook up to my laptop. Unfortunately, since my previous laptop stopped working, I have not been able to use this projector. That has all changed with my new computer. I am able to access math, reading and writing videos that support the Common Core Standards. Lastly, I have been accessing games that reinforce skills taught through our new school wide reading and writing curriculum.
This project has boosted my students' learning in so many ways. My students are motivated by the computer and have been accessing all that it has to offer. They are being exposed to content in a different way because of the educational cartoons and videos that reinforce skills taught through the curriculum. Students have even been playing games to reinforce skills and strategies they are learning. These tools have opened the door to so many new learning opportunities.
Once again thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generosity.
With love and gratitude,
Priscilla Levy”
