Every few years, schools change their curriculums and understanding of what it takes to close the achievement gap and develop strong readers. Never do those changes bring about consistent and long-term results. I believe that this year, we've finally realized that in order to best help our students, we have to provide them with multiple opportunities to read engaging texts each and every day throughout the school day, both independently and with partners.
Students of color, in the inner-city public schools, are falling behind their counterparts in suburban schools districts because they are traditionally performing at lower reading levels. The only way to support these students of color is with targeted and meaningful guided reading instruction, which combines strategic teaching with modeling and rich discussions through the use of a high-interest and relatable text.
The texts I am requesting are texts that will pique student interest, relate to their everyday experiences, and inspire them to read, learn, and do more outside of their every day realities.
Students will enjoy reading about the Uglies in a "utopian" society where people are judged and granted certain permissions due to their looks because it will cause them to reflect on society's beauty standards. Students will enjoy reading about how pre-teens their age, all around the world, have been forced to grow up and help provide for or protect themselves or their families, just as they have in the city. My students will enjoy getting lost in texts about fictional societies that force families to abort their children to control population efforts, especially since there are numerous text to world connections.
I am seeking these texts to inspire my scholars to read more and more, each and every day, as reading is the only key that's capable of opening so many doors.
