Because we are a Title I school, many of these children come from abject poverty and reduced circumstances at home. Research shows that students who come from low-income households are more likely to struggle with classroom engagement, but it is my goal to break down these barriers for my students. When my students walk into the classroom each day, I want them to feel comfortable and know they are valued and safe; the purchase of new tables to create a stronger classroom community will allow a space in which to maximize their learning potential. As a Title I school, it is often difficult to find extra funds necessary to update basic classroom items such as desks and seating. We are currently using rusted, out-dated desks that are more than 30 years old. Instead of the standard side-by-side seating, the use of round tables will allow students to work with more of their classmates at a time (groups of 4 instead of 2) and will allow them to have more choices in their classroom seating. The addition of these 3 tables is my first step in creating a clean, modern space for my students to learn and grow. These babies are WORTH it, and I look forward to the excitement on their faces when I can put this project into effect for them!
