I teach four different classes, (2) 7th grade, (2) 8th grade. I teach enrichment for a fifth period to the 8 grade, rotating every other day. Our enrichment class can range anywhere from working on an assignment we may not have finished in class earlier in the day to watching a little kid cartoon movie and pointing out the literary connections. My students are awesome, but every teacher says that. Together we create a safe welcoming environment with the idea of what is said in class, stays in class. Unless it is something that can be harmful to themselves or others. This allows freedom of conversation without repercussions and allows respect to be fostered naturally and not just expected because of adult/child interactions. Relationships are key in the classroom and I use everything in my power to encourage positive relationships between my students, with other adults in the building and with myself.
