My students love to use large wooden blocks for building, magnetic shapes for creating, and an old marble run set I've recycled to design and build pathways for marbles. I've seen how my students stay with the task using those materials that I want more opportunity for them to develop those STEM skills. This freestanding board will provide opportunities for students to collaborate and work together to have a place to use these STEM sets. The Engineer a Coaster set and the Create a Path set will allow their problem-solving skills to develop and be refined. As they try and fail, then try again, they will be able to learn perseverance, and to solve a problem from a different perspective, and to achieve the success of having the balls, or other rolling items reach the bottom. Too often, students may give up if there isn't enough motivation to try again. They will be so engaged in trying to achieve success that they won't realize they're learning. The Gingerbread problem Solving Kit will provide another opportunity to enhance their problem solving skills when they try to help the boy escape the fox. My students will have to plan, create and test solutions to get the Gingerbread Man across a river. Each of these STEM kids come with cards which directs them to build, test, or try to find solutions with tasks ranging from simple to more complex, allowing for a challenge as they gain skills. The Three Bears STEM kit also provides a challenge to build a chair that one or all three bear figures can sit on and not break. That kit too provides another opportunity for my students to refine their science and math skills. Through these highly engaging tasks, it will naturally inspire them to explore and learn.
