Funded Jul 26, 2016Dear Donors,
This professional development opportunity was called Exploring Computer Science, a week-long course where teachers learned how to incorporate the ECS curriculum into their classroom. The goal of spreading the ECS "love" is to close the gap between computer science education in schools, especially to females and ethnic groups. The coursework includes not only computer science skills, but holistic concepts about computer science. For example, the first unit is about Computer Applications and they scaffold the curriculum to end with the most difficult unit of all, Robotics. Students are encouraged to embrace computer science as a whole and develop a passion for it before they have to engage in more difficult lessons, really integrating problem solving skills throughout the year long course.
The highlight of this event for me was being surrounded by teachers from all different walks of life, with different levels of experience. There is nothing better than learning from each other and being able to implement something you learned from an opportunity like this one into your classroom. I took an entire notebook full of notes about how I could bring these tools back to my school and tweak them specifically to my own students so they can benefit from them.
So far, one specific, amazing skill I have taken from the ECS course was learning to count in binary. This was not only a personal accomplishment, but one I cannot wait to share with my students. One of the tools that was given to us was a "Flippy-Do", which sounds a little silly but made the learning process so fun! I know that with my students' passion for learning and infectious enthusiasm, they will love learning to count in binary too.
Thank you so much for funding this professional learning opportunity for me. I am so grateful to be able to apart of closing the gap that exists in computer science education. Your generous donation is getting my students one step closer!”
