  • Amazing Music Journey to Carnegie Hall!

    Funded Dec 3, 2019

Through participating in the "Musical Explorers" program, I am so blessed that my 2nd grade students had the chance to learn six different cultural music styles and instruments, as well as taking the field trip to Carnegie Hall to join an interactive concert in January 2020. Though the 2nd interactive concert was cancelled in May, my students could still watch the virtual concert produced by Carnegie Hall to complete the second half of the musical learning journey associated with the "Musical Explorers" program!

On the other hand, my 4th grade students had so much fun learning recorder and were able to play, sing, and dance to some classic jazz tunes like "When the Saints Go Marching In," "I've Got Rhythm," and "Duke's Place." Unfortunately the May field trip to Carnegie Hall was cancelled due to the pandemic. However, my students still had the opportunity to watch the virtual concert in May. They also worked on blues lyrics-writing and orchestra instruments learning projects.

After the amazing musical journey, my students kept enjoying playing recorder, singing and playing all the great songs that they learned throughout all these months. Their knowledge and passion towards world music, orchestra, and jazz has been widened too!”

  • The Magical Musical Trip to Carnegie Hall!

    Funded Dec 4, 2018

Ever since I made an announcement of the Carnegie field trip to my 2nd and 4th grade students, they were all excited and also curious about what the place may look like. Before the trip, I showed the previous musical explorers and link-up concerts videos to the students, which helped them get the general ideas about the concerts.

On the day of the field trip, everyone was thrilled! I felt all the efforts were paid off when I heard students saying "Oh my! It is so fancy!" once stepping in Carnegie Hall's entrance! What really amazed all the students was the outstanding performances, including the world-class performing artists, excellent stage decorations, awesome sound quality and effects, comfortable seating, and great hosts. This music learning environment can never be duplicated inside my music classroom!

After the trip, we did the reflections about it and students had a lot to share. The orchestra instruments, the special world instruments from Puerto Rico/Brazil/India/West Africa/Greece, and opera singing are now real to them! Even single teacher and parent chaperone gave very positive comments about the trip. All the participants said the concert experience was beyond their imagination and expectation!

I am very grateful that all the donors made this trip happen. Without your support, I can't share this amazing concert experience with my students, and all my lovely students wouldn't have the great music appreciation experience at this young age either. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

  • Let iPads Make the World Hear Our Music!

    Funded Feb 25, 2019

With the six iPads that you donated to my classroom, so many projects have become possible and had positive impacts on students' learning. Before getting the iPads, there was no way for the students to play online music learning team competition games (like Kahoot), to create drum patterns or to create phone ringtones using Garage Band App, to record singing voices and complete simple acapella projects, to work on sing & draw "Singing Fingers" fun projects, and more creative musical projects! Students from kindergarten to 8th grade loved using iPads in the classroom!

To many students, it is super exciting to create music compositions using different digital instruments from iPads! The digital music world on iPads makes their learning without limits and much more engaging.

These six iPads are also great tools for stationary projects. The class can be divided into six groups and students get to work on different small projects in each iPad station.”

  • We Need Ukuleles and Guitars to Rock!

    Funded May 31, 2018

With my sincere gratitude, I want to say THANK YOU to your generous offer - - six ukuleles, three guitars, and the nine bags! The new instruments made a great and positive impact on my middle school Modern Band lessons, because they greatly reduced the long wait time and now my students are able to spend more time learning new performing skills and experiencing the joy of music-making!

In order to make it a memorable moment for my 7th grade students, we created a "special ceremony" for taking the brand new guitar out of its box. We had four students opened the guitar box (each person holding one corner), two students played drums and hand cymbals as background music, and the rest of the class were cheering and witnessing the magical moment altogether! All the students were super excited when seeing the guitar being taken out of the box!

Guess what? The students are ready to learn some pop songs in the near future! I'm sure they will rock in music class soon! Again, we truly appreciate your support and kindness! Thank you, thank you, and thank you!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Huang

We are lucky enough to participate in the "Little Kids Rock" program and have received some modern band instruments earlier this year, but we certainly need more ukuleles and guitars to make the modern band really happen! Right now we only have 6 ukuleles and 3 guitars in the classroom (we expect to receive another 2-3 guitars in the summer from "Little Kids Rock" program). It will make a huge difference if we can get more ukuleles and guitars, because the wait time will become much shorter, given the fact that the average class size is 25-30 students in the middle school classroom (11-13 classes of students will benefit by getting new instruments). Music making is such a wonderful experience, and I sincerely hope all my middle school students are able to gain amazing experience by playing pop and folk songs in the classroom and performing on the stage in a modern band setting in the near future!
