Past projects 3
Bronx Cart Express
Funded Dec 5, 2018We have enjoyed building up our ceramics program over the past 10 years. Having the large rolling cart to keep student works safe while they are in process has made a tremendous contribution to how many projects can be going on at the same time. We label the shelves for type of project as well as for place in process. So... when Manny P came in and right away said he couldn't find his project, I asked him which one, and if he'd started glazing it. His eyes lit up and he said, "Oh riiight..." He then turned around and went right to it. That was NOT how things used to work.
When all the cart pieces were here, we had a little construction party after school. There's nothing like watching a bunch of high school kids and their teacher trying to make sense of what look like IKEA directions! Once we got it together, everyone was excited to see how much more room we had as well as how many pieces could make it through the whole process without breaking.
Ceramic projects are always the thing that get kids excited for art class. We've even been able to involve some of the middle school kids with clay projects here and there. My favorite recent project was a Warhol Style Selfie Tile project that turned out really cool. It involved photography, transferring images, carving, and painting. We displayed them all together as a panel, but then the students were able to take their tiles home.
The huge rolling cart has been a great addition to our equipment and help make our work better for everyone.”

"The Emperor's New Ceramics" - The Sequel
Funded Mar 29, 2011My students were so excited to finally be able to use clay this spring, and it was only possible with your help. We finished off the year with a month long ceramics unit. The kids were under a lot of pressure with testing and they really looked forward to art class. Even a sixth grade advisory class got in on the action because their teacher realized that working with the clay would be a great reward.
Students and teachers from the whole school would stop in to check out the clay projects. Some even came in during their lunch or after school to try it out. My middle school students learned the basic hand-building techniques - pinch, coil, and slab, and some even advanced to working on the pottery wheels. They kept sketch journals to document their progress and analyze their skills. They did even better than I expected!
Thank you so much for caring enough to participate in our education system. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.”
