This classroom project was brought to life by Someone who cares about New York City and 4 other donors.Learners for Life
Funded Mar 8, 2015Let me express my heartfelt thanks and sincere gratitude for all the gifts you provided for the children through the learner for life project. It was because of your kind generosity that I can truly say that my children learned several life changing skills. Your gifts helped to create a developmentally appropriate classroom , a place that was comfortable, safe and secure.
Upon receipt of these resources the group discussed the huge size of the materials, namely the floor puzzles. Some commented on how colorful the floor puzzles were. I remember the girls saying the babies needed more clothes. One girl in particular kept asking for the baby bottle so that she could feed the babies. I later found out that she had a baby brother at home and she was just making connection with what was seen at home and what she thought should happen with the babies at school. Some were worried about learning to lace up and tie shoe laces. The boys loved the safety vehicles and started making sounds of the vehicles as they examined them. The children were very pleased.
My children and I used the resources in various ways; I used them to demonstrate what was to be done in several lessons. The children used them in pairs or small groups when trying to master concepts I also demonstrated the correct way to use and store the resources Some of the resources were given to the children to create whatever they wanted ,thus encouraging them to be better creative thinkers and use their imaginations to explore. These materials were individually and culturally appropriate. Children were able to see representation of themselves in the materials provided. These truly helped my classroom be the third teacher that my children deserved, where they could initiate and foster learning from the resources around.
This project impacted the teaching and learning process in my classroom in a very positive way. The reason is, I received resources that impacted all the domains that I was targeting for growth in my children, especially the social- emotional domain. On many occasions the children worked in groups, I observed them willingly sharing classroom materials, waiting for their turn , helping to complete puzzles, building roads and driving together. I was often amazed and encouraged at these sightings, because these are not easy feats for four year old children. The fact that my children had enough materials to work with made the classroom a happy, less stressful place for the students and they became better thinkers and communicators overall. This project helped to foster independence , self control, self regulation, empathy and a general love and care among the children. Not to be out done, the children grew academically as well, learning their shapes and colors ,letter and numbers too, wrote their names, recited many nursery rhymes and sang songs. They have also developed into great story tellers and are ready for kindergarten. Continue to fund these projects because you are really saving lives.”
