Funded Mar 27, 2018Our 3D printer, supplies and books have been an exciting edition to our school. The books have been a great resource for the students to get some background information about 3D printers.
As of yet, I have not come across a student, teacher or staff that have experienced a 3D printer. This is their first time seeing one. Their wide-eyed enthusiasm is contagious. Even the most hardened student finds it of interest and I have an attentive captive audience listening to my explanation of what is printing or the projects that can be made by a 3D printer here and in other locations around the world. I tell them there is a 3D printer on the international space station and I explain some real world application examples to them such as the prosthetic hand project.
One of the first projects we tackled was beyond our skill level. It was the prosthetic hand, but I had some very enthusiastic 6th grade students who would stop by on their way to lunch to see how it was progressing. We learned from our mistakes, but are in the final stages of finishing it. Their enthusiasm propelled me to find user friendly directions to complete it.
We had the English Language learner students come with their teacher and they were fascinated by the 3D printer. Many teachers are planning a project with their students with the 3D printer.
I think my greatest joy comes from observing the students who are involved with the 3D printing projects gaining a lot of self-confidence.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Morrow
