My students will use these sketchbooks in particular to take Art Chat notes (art history lessons on past and present artists), preliminary sketch work, sharpies and other drawing materials to learn how to do gestures, and finally create expressive wire sculptures and paintings combining what they've learned. My goal for them is not not only gain confidence, but to be able to successfully defend something they've created as an extension of themselves in the VASE competition. Everything will be also showcased in the Spring Art Show as well. The Spring Art Show is a fundraiser, where members of the community can bid on pieces with a silent auction. Any money raised will go right back to the students in the art department. Getting the local community involved in our school is a personal goal of mine, and I think the easiest way is through art. By donating these materials, you are helping arm my students with confidence, self-awareness, and empathy, by exploring art and art history. You are also helping bring in the local community to our school. I love that the students will have a visual recording of their growth through their art, and something they can reflect on in years to come. And hopefully, bring awareness to the community that even a Title I school in the midst of an upper class neighborhood has unimaginable creativity that is yet to be unlocked.
