Building a Strong Community One Step at a Time
Funded Dec 18, 2022Thank you so much for your generous donation. My First Grade students were ecstatic when we received the lego sets.
My students have been visiting various parks in local communities. And they learned what items are special to them when we visited the parks. The students loved the playground part of the parks. They love to see, to explore various signs, and sculptures in the parks. They enjoyed playing on the equipment with their friends. With the lego sets, they collaboratively communicate, play, and interact with their friends while they build their own parks with the lego pieces. The monkey bars, the slides and the swings are their favorite equipment.”

iPads Can Help Us Achieve Our Goals
Funded Aug 12, 2021Thank you so much for your generous donations of 4 iPads to use in my classroom.
Having to buy books are incredibly costly for my classroom so having 4-iPads
help my students to be independent readers. The students are able to share the iPads during Independent Reading times. We use Educational websites for the students to access free reading books. Students choose books to read and students get to have stories read to them. Our curriculum is focused on Social Emotional Learning. Kids read books about being helpful, being kind, being brave, being a good citizen, making choices, etc.”

Funded Apr 7, 2020Thank you so much for your generous donation of an iPad Pro. We have been waiting for the iPad for awhile. When my class heard the news that we received an iPad to use for our class sessions during Zoom meetings, they were very excited. Now, we have an extra tool that we can use to explore many educational websites with child friendly visual aids during our zoom sessions. I can also keep my visual connection with the students while I am helping my students learn more the different modes of transportation in our local community.
During our hybrid schedule, lots of my students are learning from home on their iPads and/or laptops. With the addition of an iPad, I can share screens. I can show students visuals of the different mode of transportation and the students can stay focus on the topic. The teacher can also see the students at the same time. In one of our sessions, we reviewed the different types of transportation. Students were able to identify and to discuss their favorite modes of transportation in our local community during a class discussion.”

Help My Students Become Organized Writers
Funded Aug 13, 2020Thank you so much for helping me make this project, Help My Students Become Organized Write, become a reality for my awesome and humorous Kindergarten students. We received our notebooks at the beginning of the In-person sessions in September. The plan was to let the students learn to organize their work, e.g. directionality when they write from top to bottom, left to right, put spaces between words and to use punctuation marks. Due to COVID-19, lots of students are working from home. The In-person and Remote students are benefitting from receiving notebooks to use. Our parents are also very appreciative in receiving notebooks to use this year. I was able to take some photos of my students using the notebooks and to learn to organize their thoughts on paper. They were very excited to receive free notebooks for this school year. They were ecstatic to know that a donor from Donor's Choose supported them and helped fund our project.”

Funded Jul 8, 2014Thank you so much for your generous donation. We are using the five mini-Ipads in our Social Studies program. My Second Grade students were very excited when we received the 5-mini Ipads. They wanted to use the mini-Ipads right away. I wanted to put screen protectors and foam covers/carriers on them before they use them. I demonstrated on how to access the internet, which sites are kid friendly, and how to choose which websites are reliable and trustworthy.
During this unit of study, Bridges, the students learn to use the mini-Ipads to type in key words, to visit various key friendly websites, and to select a real bridge from around the world to do their individual bridge projects by looking at pictures and read some of the interesting facts for the bridges to help them select their bridge to do their projects. After gathering information and organizing their findings, they will use materials such as, 1"x2" cardboard boxes, popsicle sticks, glue, construction papers, and yarn to build models to replicate models of some of the real bridges around the world. They will find interesting facts about the bridges they selected to do an in-depth study. Then each student will orally share their findings and display their 3D models for visitors to see and to ask questions. After modeling and class discussions, the students will work with their partners to access the internet and search on kid friendly websites to gather photos, facts, and use their notes to create and display their work to the school community and to their parents and grandparents.
On a daily basis, most of the students work independently in small group settings. Some students work with the classroom teacher to help read and interpret the information that they were unclear about. With the use of the mini-Ipads, some students that have difficulty in asking questions they use the mini-Ipads to help them ask questions by pointing to the diagram(s) and/or sentences that need further explanations. They are very eager and love to share their knowledge with one another during share time. The students learn to support their answers by referring to the website(s) that they found interesting. The students also learn to understand some of the social and economical affects on local communities from having a bridge built in a community. With the help of using the mini-Ipads, the students finish their work faster. They learn to to support their opinions and to use some sources to help support their opinions. The students learn to illustrate and label parts of the bridges from various websites.
For our end unit project, the students' will display their 3D models of bridges and orally present their findings to their parents, to their grandparents, and to some of their after school instructors.”

Integrating Technology With Social Studies In The Classroom
Funded Aug 25, 2014Thank you so much for your generous donation. My Second Grade students were ecstatic when we received the laptop. My students were shouting and yelling, "yay, we got it!" We love to use the new Apple Laptop in our Social Studies unit of study, Transportation/New York Subway in our classroom. They are learning to access various websites on the computer and also they are learning to safety handle computers in the classroom.
On a daily basis, we continue to be engaged in using technology with our Social Studies curriculum in our classroom. They enjoy working on the laptop to access the internet. They are learning to be patient by taking turns in using the Apple laptop computer to meet the common core standards in English, Reading, Writing, and Math. My students are also given ample opportunities to work independently. They are very enthusiastic to learn about the history of building the New York City subway system, to see subway cars being used in the 1920's, 1960's, and in the 1970's. They are learning to read some non-fictional articles about some social and economic impacts of building the subway system in New York City. They can stay focus on their task for a longer time when they are searching various kid friendly websites to help get information for their projects. They learn to record and to organize the information they want to share with their classmates. The students are also learning to effectively communicate with one another. The students will also practice using some applications such as Microsoft Word, iPhoto, and Keynote to help create a slideshow and to make informational booklets.
This project helped boost my teaching and the students' interests and their abilities to learn have shown much improvement in their stamina in reading non-fiction texts, writing paragraphs to express their opinions and use resources to help support their opinions, and to improve their oral skills. The Apple MacBook also allow more time for my students to work independently based on their interests. The students have more ample opportunities to give more time to learn to gather materials to create their projects. After students gather their information, they can use the application, Microsoft Word, to help organize and to create an informational booklet to share with their parents, grandparents, and/or after school teachers. The students will be making informational booklets or travel brochures that will include their favorite places to visit in New York City by using the subway.”
