  • Seeing Yourself in Literature: Middle Grade Novels with Multiracial Characters

    The OWN voices books have been a massive success in our classroom this year. They have opened up a new set of authors for our students, and many have expressed how they feel validated by the various stories. One of my favorite things to see this year has been how our students have read through almost all of an author's offerings thanks to these selections.

    Many of our students have requested more books by these authors, purchased books by these authors after being introduced to them thanks to this donation, or with their public library cards have gone out and borrowed them. What is even more exciting is that these books have engaged many of my more reluctant readers who feel seen and heard through the stories told in these titles.
