As many high school students are looking toward their future and the possibilities that lay ahead of them, mine struggle with many of the cultural and economic factors that hold them back. With a student population of low income Hispanic and African-American students between 15 and 19 years old, all need individualized instruction to close the gap between where they are and where they have potential to be academically. Many of them do not see themselves as scholars without the extra push and encouragement from those who show that they believe in them. My students typically like music, social media, athletics and cultural events. For those students who find traditional school is not for them, our district has some great opportunities like vocational schools where they are exposed to valuable trade skills.
