My students come from a small village but reside in a very diverse world-society. Reading not only brings the world to their doorstep, but also helps them gain a life-skill that will benefit them as life-long learners. Talking about it with a friend makes it a safe place to learn. I am requesting diverse books that they'll love to talk about. You can help provide multi-leveled books that will get my fourth graders talking about diverse people, places, and challenges. Our Book Talks Book Club will both spark an interest in reading and help students share ideas. Becoming a refugee, being transgender, making and losing friends, growing up during the civil rights movement, and finding your own voice are just a few of the contemporary subjects. Experiencing books with relevant topics, on pressing modern issues, and having opportunities to talk about them will spark a joy of reading and open minds to many possibilities.
