We are a small school in a impoverished inner city neighborhood. There has been much gentrification in the surrounding blocks near school but most of our students come from north of that, where conditions are much worse. Rapes, drug deals, drug induced neighbors, gun violence, its all very common to my students. They are mainly of Puerto Rican decent some from the Domican Republic, some African American, and some whom are White or Asian. Our students come from conditions we cannot even imagine and have been through a lot. That is why I want art class to be a happy place where they can make something and create a positive lifetime memory. Many of our kids like to sew, cook, do construction, work on cars so that is why I'm focusing our projects on crafts.
