  • Interactive Sketch Books

    Funded Sep 7, 2021

Thank you so much for our new sketchbooks! The kids are so excited about having a book of their own to draw in. They love that there are pages that they can color designs in and then also blank pages to work on their own!

When I passed out the new books, kids were surprised that it would be only for them! They love having their name on a book that they can go to and use when they are done with their work. They are kept in the classroom and kids help themselves to use during recess or when they have free time.

The "elements of art" section in the books has been very instructive- giving kids a chance to explore and experience using these elements on their own. When we discuss these in class students are able to refer to their sketchbooks for more information and to try things out!

We thoroughly enjoy being able to use our sketchbooks and are so grateful to be able to have them!”

  • Sew Easy! Softie Friends for Kids!!

    Funded Sep 23, 2021

My students loved learning how to sew! A few of our ML students had sewed with their grandmothers in DR, and were thrilled to be able to be the "teachers" and help others thread needles and make knots! This was a great opportunity for students who often take a quiet observer role in the classroom to step up and be leaders.

Students were thrilled when they saw the wide assortment of colors of brand new fabric and "real" needles. They typically use plastic needles and scraps of fabric so this felt very special. They enthusiastically designed and created their softies.

Several students started coming to the art room during recess to continue sewing and create more pillows and softies. This informal "lunch bunch" has actually become a popular option for kids to eat lunch and spend recess, which can be quite chaotic and loud in the cafeteria. I love that my self and my team mate teachers have been able to enjoy lunch with some kids and give them a chance to have a "studio" atmosphere to create special pieces of art!”

  • Creative Brain Breaks

    Funded Oct 23, 2020

Throughout the pandemic my students experienced a lack of control and stress- their lives were upended and the predictable routines of school were disrupted. Many of their families experienced health and financial crisis, and the otherwise comforting adults in their lives were consumed with just keeping their families afloat. Creative brain breaks helped students to develop strategies for self regulation and calming. Students were thrilled to receive a "tool" to use creatively. Bingo markers, stamps, spinners and DIY dice sparked their excitement. We created patterns, mandalas and games with spinners and dice. Students learned the meditative practice of zen doodling and were able to combine and apply their new strategies in ways that would distract them from the swirling issues of the outside world. This year I plan to continue teaching students creative strategies to self regulate. I hope that my students continue to see and use art as a way to add a dimension of control, serenity and creativity to their lives throughout their entire school careers! Thank you for helping me to make it possible for a generation of learners to stretch their mindsets and develop their creative brains!”

  • Sketchbook Journals K-5

    Funded Sep 5, 2019

Just a quick update.... I have been giving my students their sketchbooks! They are thrilled:) Thank you so much- they proudly put their names on them and have used them for " free drawing " and are signing them out to draw during recess. I am currently painting a cabinet to keep the sketchbooks in and creating " recess packs" ( baggies of drawing supplies and small drawing books and magnifying glasses) so they are readily accessible to the kids and easy to check in and out. We love them- I'll keep you posted as we use them more!!
