  • Judge a Book by Its Cover!

    Funded Dec 6, 2016

Thank you for your generous donation! We were able to complete two books that have been waiting since December! My students LOVE to read their own writing. Since they can't write yet, we focus on pre-printed sight words that they illustrate. Their desire to focus has been increased, which allows them to build endurance for future reading. They love making the books as much as they love reading them! I also have used the machine to create sight word practice books for my challenge students. This is a great way to help them practice at school and at home! The easier we can make it on parents, the more willing they are to participate. Thank you again!”

  • Testing, Testing, One, Two, Three!

    Funded Nov 29, 2016

I was able to move all of my testing materials to the mobile file unit! Now, I can test anywhere in the room without having to waste valuable time locating materials or gathering them. I was able to test all of my students in two days! The headphones allowed them to use their iPads to practice important skills and take independent quizzes. I have had four students move to a higher group! With the immediate testing data, I was also able to zone in on which students were weak in specific areas before I completed my monthly planning. This means the students are grouped accordingly and receiving tailored lessons and activities during instruction time. Thank you so much!”

  • One Size Does Not Fit All

    Funded Dec 6, 2016

Thank you for your generous donations! My students LOVE the new materials! They have a new interest and enthusiasm for their work. They have been using sequins to decorate their artwork, review sight words and letters, and review shapes. They were ECSTATIC to see the new spangles! They literally screamed when they found bats in them! (We did a unit on bats in October.)

They also loved the glitter tempera paint! The large fingerpainting paper was a Godsend! The large paper not only supplied enough room to keep the paint on the paper, but its durability kept the table clean underneath as well as hold up against holes and tears! I can't wait to see how they react to the watercolors tomorrow! Thank you!”

  • Music for Everyone

    Funded Nov 7, 2016

We used the new bells this week for the first time to do Jingle Bells! The students were super excited! We use them twice a week, so more than 60 students were able to use them this week alone! I wanted to share that I received a note from one of the teachers who said that music was her students' favorite thing all week! We are hearing from parents that their children are going home and talking about music! I almost cried when I heard how much this project had affected the children. I would have NEVER been able to make this possible without all of your tremendous generosity!”

  • Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader

    Funded Nov 19, 2016

Students were terribly excited about the new Disney story! They all chose it first!

I love having the listening center for many reasons. It's a great way to let students hear stories read by different people with inflection. Students are also able to listen to stories read at their own pace and learn to follow along in a book. Children today are motivated by technology and this is a great way to connect technology and literature!

Students love being able to listen to the books when they please. They also like to rewind and hear their favorite stories over and over. Many students learn the stories and begin to read them on their own!

My two new students who struggle in many areas particularly benefit from this technology. They are able to practice endurance in sitting and listening. It gives them more opportunities to hear books that they do not hear at home. It also exposes them to the excitement of discovering what books have to offer.

Many thanks to you for helping with this project. It is rare to have it in classrooms and I am truly grateful.”

  • Learning through Art

    Funded Nov 19, 2016

These were the best reactions ever! The students literally cheered when we unpacked the boxes! We used then the very first day; how could I say no? We used the sequins to outline sight word and letters. The paint aprons were very popular and much more effective than anticipated!

The students asked to decorate trees for the holiday, so we are planning on finishing them tomorrow.

The beads are AMAZING. They ate carried in size and difficulty for beading. The students will sort them first and then string them!

    Thank you again!!!”

  • Healthy Children Learn Better

    Funded Nov 19, 2016

I received your generous donation today! The students' reaction was priceless! They were so happy to have a variety of healthy snacks to choose! What made it even better was that they LOVED them! There was something for everyone to enjoy; and they didn't even know that they were eating healthier. I was able to send home a note to parents with pictures letting them know that these healthy alternatives were a big hit! The students' energy levels were renewed and we were able to use every minute of our day. I can't wait to let them try something new again tomorrow!”

  • Every Child Should Be Successful

    Funded Nov 19, 2016

These materials are AMAZING! All the students were excited to see them! However, I was amazed at how versatile they were. While I had anticipated using them solely with my struggling students, I was shocked to see how my advanced guys were able to produce some pretty fantastic pieces.

I would love to get the additional set with more pieces to see what they come up with next! The girls all went for the family members and immediately started building a house. I plan to find task cards to encourage all students to go beyond simple square buildings.

    Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Newman

  • Explore It, Think About It, Communicate It!

    Funded Oct 26, 2016

We received the materials on Monday this week and we are already using them! The students were very excited to see all the new materials. They were particularly anxious to use the roller coaster. We took a vote on what to use first.

My students especially love the house building and the roller coaster building kits. It was great to see them talking it out today and problem solving when the coaster did not work properly. We had 6 guest students from second grade today who were able to use it as well. They, too, loved the activity. Even at that age, students were compelled to justify their reasoning behind the movements they made. This was exciting for me because I can invite other grades into our room to participate in building projects. They can work with the younger students and provide additional vocabulary and reasoning skills.

We are waiting for a water table to use the sink or float kit and the water play kit. The water table is going to be the next project we pursue. We can't wait!

We currently have a music project up to help include all of our students in music lessons we have twice a week. I am currently the only teacher who does music and I am hoping to show other teachers how simple and fun and educational music is in the classroom. Our current dilemma is that one student only has one hand and most of our instruments require two hands such as rhythm sticks and cymbals.”

  • Science is Inspiring

    Funded Jun 28, 2016

My students have had a BLAST with these new materials! We have gathered insects for inspection with the new micro-viewers, learned to weigh and balance with the scales, had in-depth conversations about observations made using our new goggles and we plan to investigate ladybugs in the spring! My students were most enthusiastic about observing bugs in the micro-viewers. This was their favorite activity so far. My guys are little, so the reactions I get to new items is so rewarding! The eye goggles were also a big hit. They each have a little setup with goggles, lab coats, magnifying lenses, and tweezers. Every week we discover new things to investigate and observe. The impact that these materials have had with my EL students has been incredible. Students who do not usually participate, are so excited about what they're seeing, that they can't help themselves! They just burst with observations and discoveries!

We just finished learning about pumpkins - inside and out - and now we are getting ready to look at how corn grows and is harvested. We will use popcorn as a weight and make observations in our little booklets about what it looks like far away and magnified. Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Newman

My school is an overflow school. This means that students who are kicked out of other schools, or pushed out due to lack of room are bussed to us. Many of our students do not receive support at home. This particular class has had a rough year and they have not had the exposure to science and history that they should. Many students do not receive meals at home and several more do not have access to books.
