  • Students in the Heart of Corona in Need of Instruments

    Funded Dec 19, 2022

This was an exciting year for the P.S.14 music department, and we couldn't have done it without your donations! The funds from this project went towards revitalizing our band and violin program, and the results were immediate:

    - The band accessories allowed students to have all the equipment needed for rehearsals and performances, while violin accessories (rosin, strings, bows, cases) ensured that students came prepared for every lesson.

    - With the purchase of new 1/2 and 3/4 violins, we revived the violin mentoring club, inviting over 30 fourth-grade students to learn alongside and from our senior fifth-grade violin students.

    - We had students audition and get accepted to local orchestras and perform all around the city.

    - We purchased a viola allowing one of our students to switch from the violin to the viola. She will begin viola performance when she starts middle school in September.

    - There were countless opportunities for our students to perform this semester. Our band and violin students delighted their families at the culminating June concert with all their progress. Our ensembles were also invited to represent our school at the district festival, senior award assembly, and graduation ceremony, where they played Pomp and Circumstance and the Star Spangled Banner, among others. Our fifth-grade violin graduates performed Bach's Minuet No. 2 at this year's graduation ceremony.

Students were thrilled to receive brand-new equipment. It motivated them to practice,

push themselves to play more challenging music, and enact their leadership skills. In the 2023-2024 school year, students look forward to continuing lunchtime and after-school band and violin lessons. I look forward to expanding our wonderful music program in the fall!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ortega

  • Keyboard Section for Grade 2 Music Classroom

    Funded Oct 30, 2015

    Dear Donors,

On behalf of my students, I would like to thank you for helping us in obtaining keyboards for our music classroom. Throughout the year the keyboards were put to several uses. Students in the general music class were able to use the keyboards to learn basic keyboard skills. They also worked in small groups to practice ear-training exercises using the keyboard. The violin ensemble used the keyboards when tuning their instruments independently. The headphones were a great tool for students engaging in independent work.

Students were anticipating the arrival of the instruments and were thrilled when the instruments finally arrived. For most of the students, it was the first time interacting with a keyboard and they reveled at learning its many uses.

In the 2016-2017 school year, the keyboards will be put to even greater use. The keyboards will continue to support our second grade students who, for the most part, are in their first year of general music in the classroom. Our second grade graduates will also continue to use the instruments in the upcoming school year. As they grow as musicians, they will be able to play chords, accompany the ensemble and compose simple melodies.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ortega

Our school is a Title I school, which serves a predominantly immigrant community. Close to 30% of our students are English Language Learners, and need a multimodal approach to learning. Music taps into their rich cultural assets, providing a bridge between their many ways of knowing, and the rigors of school curriculum. I currently teach 20 classes of approximately 600 students, in grades 1, 2, 3, and 4.
