We are seeking to use The Hate U Give as a class novel with high school seniors. As a group, they are largely socioeconomically disadvantaged, and many are at risk of not graduating because of not passing the state-mandated reading assessment. To pass, they must become better readers, and to rekindle an appreciation for reading, we feel they need an engaging text that is timely and relevant to their real lives. Our students strive to be successful, not statistics; they just need the right resources. The Hate U Give offers an exceptional opportunity to build the skills of literary analysis with struggling and/or reluctant readers. With the film adaptation coming to theaters in October, this seems like a particularly apt time to teach this novel. In years to come, this powerful story has the potential of becoming a contemporary classic. We seek to be among those educators leading the way in guiding students to explore its vital themes, with the belief that they will strengthen their literacy skills in the process.
