  • Outdoor Education Experiences for Young Adults with Disabilities

    Funded Oct 10, 2016

I cannot fully express the meaning and impact of outdoor experiences you made possible for my students this year. They were able to visit five different local and state parks in and around New Orleans, some learned how to fish or set up a tent and others experienced a day at a beach for the first time in their lives. Through these experiences, they were able to expand their personal experiences and develop preferences for a wider range of activities that will be personally fulfilling for the rest of their lives. They forged positive and lasting friendships with their classmates and teachers through outdoor team-building activities, as well.

The students I work with rarely experience the world beyond their home and their family and your generous donation allowed me to not only take them out of school and into the community but into parks and beaches and nature preserves that they would never otherwise experience. Not only did this bring them (and all of their teachers!) incredible joy but it also expanded their understanding of the world and what is possible for individuals with disabilities to access and experience in their broader community.

I truly cannot say it enough but I will certainly try. Thank you for your generosity and investment in my students and the experiences that will shape them into even more incredible young adults.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gold

  • Opportunities Academy Cafeteria Supplies

    Funded Oct 7, 2015

    Dear Donors,

Your contributions has allowed my scholars to create their own enterprise, a coffee and tea business, in our program that provides meaningful real-world work experiences and brings considerable joy to my scholars and to our school community as a whole. Starting their own business has allowed them to redefine what is possible for themselves and for those that see them at work everyday. This could not have been possible without your generosity.

Thank you and if you're ever in New Orleans come by our coffee shop, tOAsty's, and your drink is on the house :)”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gold

  • Opportunities Academy Fitness Center

    Funded Sep 17, 2015

I can't tell you how greatly your contributions have impacted my scholars and our programming. The supplies we were able to purchase with your generous donations allows my scholars to engage in meaningful fitness activities that develop heathy habits and allow them to engage positively with peers and develop strong peer relationships. Fitness is a part of daily routines and now scholars are able to choose the activities they do, whether is conditioning, cardio or yoga. The range of equipment your donations allowed us to get has given scholars the opportunity to develop preferences in fitness activities and explore new ones they never had access to before.

Thank you again for your incredible generosity and contributions to our program. They will have long lasting impacts on current and future scholars in our program.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Gold

Our scholars come from low income communities throughout greater New Orleans, they have significant to mild exceptionalities and they have completed their Senior year of high school. Unfortunately, while their general education peers applied to colleges around the country, our scholars had no option to continue their education in New Orleans as most institutions do not have programming or supports to meet our scholars' needs. Our school believes all scholars deserve access to college and so, that's what we created with Opportunities Academy. Opportunities Academy is a college option for our scholars who do not have access to college pathways. In OA, scholars identify individualized goals for themselves and the steps they will take in order to reach them. Their goals include goals for independent living, fitness, daily living skills, career pursuits and goals for their personal life and positive relationship networks.
