From the Bottom of Our HeARTs, Help Us Do Art!
Funded Nov 28, 2022Thank you from the bottom of our heARTs for our art supplies! Some of the items you kindly donated included bright oil pastels to contrast our black canvases. In connection with our ELA curriculum, we created oil pastel depictions of the Northern lights. We read a Historical Fiction book, The Year of Miss Agnes, set in a one-room school house in remote Alaska, so vastly different than our own school in the bustling Bronx. To build our background knowledge and help us contextualize the setting, we first studied the climate and geography of Alaska, as well as the indigenous Athabaskans depicted in our story. Creating our Northern Lights artwork brought to life the remote location, where the students in the story described having to look at out of wolves on their multiple mile snow-shoe clad walk to school. (And your Grandpa thought going to school "up hill, both ways" was tough!)
Students were over the moon ecstatic when they saw the art supplies!!! They loved the kinesthetic experience of smudging and layering their colors. They described feeling calm as they created their masterpieces. When they saw the dynamic colors dancing across the page, they were so proud of themselves. Our school does not have an art teacher and so these opportunities are all the more profound. Students were given the oil pastels and more paper to take home at the end to create even more artwork!
Thank you for this opportunity. Our students would not have it without your kindness and generosity.”
