My classroom serves middle school students with moderate to severe disabilities in Maple Heights, Ohio. My students have disabilities that include: Autism, Cognitive Disabilities, Traumatic Brain Injury, Cerebral Palsy, and Other Health Impairments. Our classroom is part of an urban school district and most of my students come from low-income households, some even face the consequences associated with homelessness. Our curriculum encompasses the Ohio Extended Learning Standards and Function Life Skills. One of the biggest struggles is obtaining the resources needed to create a classroom environment in which my students can feel is their "safe space". Although my students are in middle school many of them are still learning how to read and having access to reading materials is crucial when teaching them how to become confident and fluent readers.
