  • Jot it Down Journals

    Funded Aug 26, 2019

Our students were thrilled to receive their own journals! On the first day of school, each student selected a color and spent time adding their own unique personalized decor to the outside covers. Thus far, we have utilized them every day as a way to settle in to the period and build stamina in our writing. Students have been tracking their data in terms of how much written work they are able to produce in a given amount of time.

With the English Common Core Regents less than a month away, we are certain that these journals have contributed to our overall growth and (hopefully) ultimate success on the exam. After the test is over, we are planning to continue to build on the foundation they've built and expand their written articulation.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Reid

  • Watch Me First; Then, Do!

    Funded Aug 28, 2018

The document camera that you have funded for my classroom has created equity and access for all of my learners. Every class period begins with a shared annotation of a text that is projected for all to see and follow along with. Students have been accustom to our new routine and are excited by the active participation that it allows them. Many students have been intrigued by this new piece of technology in our room and have volunteered to demonstrate their abilities for all to see.

Some of my most literacy-resistant students have warmed to the document camera because it provides them an "in." Whether they are following along with what I am doing or using my work as a model for their own, I have seen an overall spike in my classes' participation as a whole.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Reid

Having a document camera will allow my college-bound students to watch me practice annotation protocols and better learn how to take notes. Our classroom follows an ICT model meaning that 1/3 of the students are English language learners, 1/3 are general education, and 1/3 are special education students. As a teacher of literacy, modeling these key, fundamental skills is necessary for the students' success. The more confusion I can take away for the students, the better- English is hard enough! This camera will be used on a daily basis to improve the quality of my lessons and more importantly the scholar's takeaway.
