Next Up: "All American Boys"!
Funded Mar 18, 2019Having copies for all students of "All American Boys" has been GREAT! It has been an amazing book to finish the school year off with. We're still reading it now in June and let me tell you, the discussions that have come from this book have been fantastic. It features characters that look and sound exactly like our students, and also characters that don't look and sound exactly like our characters, so it's been all-around just great exposure for our students. Discussions around racism, stereotypes, and more have happened in our classroom as a result of this book. Thank you again for donating!”

New Supplies, Who This?
Funded Dec 12, 2018This project was initially created in the summertime in preparation for school year. It was funded recently and boy, was that a blessing! Most of our students' supplies such as binders and folders have begun falling apart and so this project came right on time. Thank you all so much for your contributions!
This was a fantastic project that while it seemed basic in nature, was very much needed for our classroom. Having essentials like binders, folders, notebooks, and pens really make a difference in our students lives!
Thank you all so much!”

Funded Dec 27, 2018Thank you all so much for your donations to this project! Having Kindle Fires to use to supplement reading have been fantastic for our ELA classroom.
Many students do much better with audio; sometimes that's with an adult reading aloud or listening to an audiobook. In our ELA classroom, we often follow along with audio versions of the books we're reading. Our new Kindle Fires only help that! Technology is always a hit with our middle schoolers and many enjoy technology such as tablets.
Thank you all for your contributions!”

Funded Jun 8, 2018Having these tablets have really helped reach many of our struggling readers! The current generation loves all stuff techy and this has been super helpful in getting even the most reluctant of readers interested in reading a book. Having an e-book just *seems* cooler, you know?
Independent Reading in class and monthly Reading Marathons are now enjoyable for some of our students who previously did not enjoy those activities. This is all about building reading stamina and boy has it helped many of them!
Thank you ALL so much for making this happen!”

Diverse Graphic Novels!
Funded Jan 23, 2019Thank you all for donating to our classroom! This helped fund over 20 graphic novels to add to our classroom library. It not only helped improve our monthly Reading Marathons, it has helped our Independent Reading time, and they've been used in our small groups!
Graphic novels help ALL of our readers. Titles like "Pashmina" and "Monster" have been devoured by students. Our ELL population, our Special Education population, and readers on varying reading levels have all thoroughly enjoyed all of our new graphic novels.
Thank you all again!”

The Power of Choice: Flexible Seating!
Funded Oct 18, 2018Having comfy saucer chairs and bean bags really transforms a classroom. Having ones that are colorful and patterned just ADDS to the novelty of it all! These flexible seating options have done wonders in our classroom. So many students across the country have to sit in uncomfortable metal or wooden chairs - it really takes a toll on them! These saucer chairs and bean bag have helped make our ELA classroom a warm and uber comfortable place for many of our students. They've been used during lessons, during Independent Reading time, during monthly Reading Marathons, and during the random moments of downtime we sometimes get. Thank you ALL for your contributions in making this happen! :)”

Funded Aug 14, 2018Having these materials as backup for growing middle school students has been great for our ELA classroom. Middle school is a time for a TON of change and having backups such as deodorant and feminine products for our female students has been great. Middle schoolers are going through a ton of changes; physical, emotional, and mental changes are all part of their middle school experience. It has only led to our classroom being a more supportive environment for all students. Because of the nature of this project, it has been handled with sensitivity and thoughtfulness.”

"Miss, Can I Get the Bean Bag Next?"
Funded Mar 27, 2018Our kids LOVE the bean bag and saucer chairs! It's made such an amazing impact on the culture around independent reading in our classroom. Reading can be fun, but not when you're stuck in uncomfortable chairs!
Our kids saw the huge boxes being delivered to our classroom and wondered what in the world could be in them. We kept it a surprise and the next day, revealed that we had graciously received a bean bag and multiple saucer chairs to make reading more comfortable for them! It was amazing to see their reactions! They all wanted in on a chair or bean bag and so now we rotate every few minutes so every kid has a chance at some comfy reading!”

Funded Nov 22, 2016Dr. Tyler Maxon's and the Warby Parker associates' visit to our school was fantastic! We had over 30 of our middle schoolers screened within about 4 hours and 30 were determined to need eyeglasses. I wasn't sure how their visit going to run but the day went by incredibly smoothly.
Seeing our students pick out their glasses was incredibly sweet and honestly, it made me teary-eyed. I was so happy that our kids were finally getting glasses, as many had gone years with poor vision. It was worth sharing the project over and over until it got funded. It was worth being out of my class for a day to help out with the exams. I can't wait for their visit back to distribute the eyeglasses and get them fitted! I'd do this again in a heartbeat.
These eyeglasses are going to change our kids lives! They are not only stylish, but they will give each kid a new view on life, literally and figuratively. They will no longer have to squint and strain to see the board or a friend and I cannot tell you how amazing that is! Many of them struggled to see for years---this is one of the best gifts!
On the behalf of my entire school, we'd like to express our sincerest gratitude to Donors Choose, Warby Parker and Dr. Tyler Maxon for making this possible for our kids!”

Funded Jan 22, 2017Having these new comic books is going to help our more reluctant readers gain an interest in reading! They're full of amazing illustrations, super interesting timelines, and even the covers themselves feel nice (as one of my girls said, "It's so smoooooooth!"). These books can be tied into things we're already teaching our kids, such as theme, mood, and point of view.
In our classroom, we dedicate time to independent reading each week. Besides the mini library shown in the pictures published, we also have two carts plus a floating bookshelf of books that our kids can choose from. During independent reading time, our kids choose the books THEY want to read. We recommend books based on their interests and of course grade level if they're having trouble. The goal is to not only help them enjoy reading, but to also build their reading stamina in the process.
Adding these to the collection has already been great! Immediately three of my girls (two who are ELLs) grabbed the first book that interested them. A few other students (a mix of our students with learning struggles and former and current ELLs) asked to borrow a few titles too. It's been awesome to see them get excited about a book, when most of them had already given up on books and called reading "boring".
Thank you again for making our book dreams come true!”
