Students will dialogue about present day issues through the lens of the novel, The Hate U Give. We will also use supplemental texts such as Ta-Nehisi Coates' Between the World and Me and incorporate articles from The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and other reputable news sources. Students will engage in Socratic Seminars around the topics of code switching, microaggressions, police and community relationships, and implicit and explicit bias. Students will also engage in a dialogue with local law enforcement around the events that take place within the novel The Hate U Give. Students will build on their knowledge of argument writing using the text as an anchor to support their thesis statements.
