I'm the program coordinator, advisor, and ELA teacher to a cohort of at-risk, credit deficient students in Ogden, Utah. As a Journalism major, I've incorporated journalistic learning into my ELA classes. I'm teaching my students about responsible, ethical journalism, and fact-finding. During the project, I will grant students press clearance, after they've proven competency, then I will send them out to gather information in the field. Students will take that information, write their stories, and report their findings. These students will use the contents of this grant to learn how a journalist gathers and develops a story, utilizing all the tools and skills of 21st-century multimedia journalism. My goal for this project is to engage disenfranchised and chronically non-attending students, to participate and take ownership of their education. I want to show them that learning ELA can be fun, rewarding, and valuable in their lives. Due to our school's alternative status, we do not have much funding for extracurricular programs. I've created a news desk, complete with a green screen, but I'm lacking the proper funds for lighting and cameras. Just as my students need my support, I need yours. Let's build something special, together!
