My classroom is a functional room where we use playtime to support students individualized education plans (IEP), and these specific toys will encourage my students to work and make progress on their IEP goals. Whether I want my students to support their own weight, reach out to touch something, get them to make a choice, or hold their head up for a few seconds longer, I use toys daily to motivate them to do it. The toys I chose are ones that I know specifically meet the needs of my students. Some of them have lights and sound which are wonderful attributes for my visually and hearing impaired students. I also selected some toys that have different textures which will be helpful for my tactically defensive kids. When toys such as these are presented to students during work times it can cause a student to bear weight a little longer, work to take that extra step, or use their hands to reach out and explore. For example, if I were to receive the Baby Einstein Star Bright Symphony Toy I would use it with my visually impaired students. It's colors and lights would easily catch their attention. The toy shelves would help me to organize the toys by attribute and quickly choose the appropriate toy for any student's need. My classroom is in desperate need of new toys. When I started in my classroom the toys were left behind by the teacher before me, and most of them were in very bad shape. I tossed what couldn't be fixed, and fixed what could be. I have been making what was left work for 5 years now, but most don't work.
