I work with students who have a variety of disabilities, needs and learning styles. Although I spend a majority of my day traveling to different classrooms, I often bring students to my room for small group testing and instruction, individual tutoring, and reteaching material from Math, Science, Social Studies and English/Language arts classes. Because of their unique learning styles, I have found that traditional desks do not meet their needs and set them up for success, making alternative seating a must in my class. Students are naturally active and need seating arrangements that encourage positive activity while learning. Having a variety of options, such as standing or rocking, would allow them to exert excess energy but continue to work without disturbing others.
