  • Dissections for My Future Doctors and Scientists

    Funded Sep 8, 2010

Thank you so much for your incredible contributions to my classroom.

My students had a wonderful time dissecting fetal pigs and owl pellets. During our unit on Ecosystems and Population, owl pellets provided the perfect way for my students to get a hands-on investigation with food chains and food webs. Through the pellets, we found that the owls were eating mice, moles, shrews, and smaller birds. My students could then fully comprehend how to diagram and create a food web when they had had an opportunity to experience the process themselves.

I am so thankful to everyone who has allowed my students to have these rare, life-enriching experiences. You have truly made a positive impact in the educations and lives of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Justicz

  • Dissections for my Future Doctors and Scientists!

    Funded Aug 31, 2010

Thank you all so much for your generous donations. Your donations had a huge impact on my students and my students had an incredible time in our dissection of fetal pigs! They saw how the body systems worked and interacted with each other while my doctor dad assisted. They said that nothing in their textbook could compare with seeing organs in a real-life organism.

I explained to my students how's Donor's Choose works, and they are so thankful to the people who made it possible. They loved writing the thank you letters, and I loved that they could express their gratitude. I am so appreciative to every donor who made their learning possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Justicz

My students are incredible, and they have been through so much. Following Katrina, my students (already behind) have a lot of catching-up to do, especially in science. They attend a charter school in Louisiana with extremely limited funding for science equipment. This year especially has been tighter than before, and while I was able to get sheep hearts for my 7th graders last year, there is no money to do the same for this year. I had hospital equipment (seen in the photograph) donated, and my students still talk about how incredible an experience it was to dissect a heart. This has inspired me to continue to keep science as interactive as possible for them, but I can't do it by myself. Allowing my kids opportunities to dissect animals, raise butterflies, or interact with the rocks and minerals we're learning about lets me teach them better and helps them to learn better. My kids have rough home lives, and their behavior is much improved when they are engaged and interested.
