Funded Nov 6, 2018I enjoy being part of the reading intervention team at our school. I get to help monitor and set plans for SRI growth for all of our students in each grade level. SSR (silent sustained reading) and one on one reading conferences are some of the ways that I help students reach their SRI goals.
The reason why I like SSR is because this is when students get to be autonomous and select the book that they want to read. Students use this same book in their one on one reading conference with me. Having these books in their class library in their native language Spanish and books they have asked for like "El Capitan Calzoncillos (Captain Underpants), Nate el grande (Big Nate), and Diario de Greg (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) will create a stampede to read during SSR time.
In the past students in reading intervention struggled with reading stamina because they felt like there were not enough copies of books of interest to read and or because they simple can not access the English language as well as some of their peers because their home language is Spanish; however, WITH THEIR NEW BOOKS students could not wait to select a new book for SSR!
I can tell that my students are very excited by the smiles on each face and how each of the books got taken off of the table before they could even get put on the book shelf.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Nixon
