  • Work Hard/Play Hard: Balance During Distance Learning! Part 2

    Funded Feb 18, 2021

There is strength in unity! Thank all of you so much that helped another one of my distance learning projects get funded to support my students and reward them for all of their hard work while the world is collectively dealing with covid-19. These activity books, art kits, and coloring materials will be one of the fun early Christmas gifts for them in April. I appreciate your efforts.

Students will also get to pick which prize they would like when their name is drawn to add to the fun!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Nixon

Thank all of you so much that helped my distance learning project get funded to support my students! The books will allow students to continue working on their reading goals at home . These books will be one of the best early Christmas gifts for them. I appreciate your efforts.

Students will also enjoy the games that are for prizes to reward them for their hard work during distance learning and help motivate them to keep up the great work! Students are very excited and I can tell by the smiles on each face when they talk to me on zoom. ”

  • Stampede to Read: Satisfaction Guaranteed: Part Two Home Libraries

    Funded Jul 5, 2020

Teaching Reading Intervention on campus in a classroom with a library full of book options to read is great...but as you know learning looks very different this year for students around the world! Allowing students to take books with them to build their home libraries in these times is one of the most important steps in helping them to maintain reading fluency and reading comprehension! Being able to read to a family member for even just 15-20 minutes each night WITH NEW BOOKS can keep students motivated and engaged in learning.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT :)”

  • Superstar Readers in the Bay

    Funded Jan 2, 2020

Thank you for all of your suppot in giving my students prizes to reward them for their reading growth! I enjoy being part of the reading intervention team at our school. I get to help monitor and set plans for SRI growth for all of our students in each grade level. Beside that, I also get to help plan the celebrations for SRI growth on a classroom and schoolwide level.

I have seen students grow over time and I am glad to see the progress that they are making in reading intervention...and I am also glad to see school wide reading growth as well.

I can not wait to give students the prizes that they have earned!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Nixon

  • Stampede to Read: Satisfaction Guaranteed

    Funded Nov 6, 2018

I enjoy being part of the reading intervention team at our school. I get to help monitor and set plans for SRI growth for all of our students in each grade level. SSR (silent sustained reading) and one on one reading conferences are some of the ways that I help students reach their SRI goals.

The reason why I like SSR is because this is when students get to be autonomous and select the book that they want to read. Students use this same book in their one on one reading conference with me. Having these books in their class library in their native language Spanish and books they have asked for like "El Capitan Calzoncillos (Captain Underpants), Nate el grande (Big Nate), and Diario de Greg (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) will create a stampede to read during SSR time.

In the past students in reading intervention struggled with reading stamina because they felt like there were not enough copies of books of interest to read and or because they simple can not access the English language as well as some of their peers because their home language is Spanish; however, WITH THEIR NEW BOOKS students could not wait to select a new book for SSR!

I can tell that my students are very excited by the smiles on each face and how each of the books got taken off of the table before they could even get put on the book shelf.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Nixon

The reading intervention class that I teach is for students that have an SRI lexile level that ranges from BR to 400. Some of my students are newcomers that speak Spanish or Arabic. Other students are native English speakers. The SRI does not give me much data; especially for my students that score BR. All of my reading intervention students are in my class because they struggle being able to navigate the English language and show major growth (at least two hundred point or more by the end of a school year) on the SRI district assessment. As a result my site decided to implement the use of LLI and the Fountas and Pinnell assessments to see and celebrate students reading and comprehension growth.
